Vampire portraits: Solomon and Ernie

The vampires of Roanoke are getting further fleshed out here. Up first is Solomon.

I'm not very satisfied with this pic. It lacks the grey ashen skin tone of the vampires in my previous portrait post, but that's more an issue with Sims 3 than with the appearance of Solomon. But the way I really envision Solomon is actor Chris Hemsworth as Thor. But I didn't want to go completely the route of making him a double of the actor anymore than I did any of the other characters who are based on real people. So this is what I ended up with.

By contrast, I am delighted with this portrait of Ernie. A bit like the real person who played him, a bit sexually ambiguous (he's wearing makeup), and a bit disheveled all in one. Really pleased with how he turned out.

I'm going to mention a couple of notable absences here. I'm not planning to depict the other vampires of Roanoke in these portraits. While I don't mind the absence of Sophia and the other minor vampires, not having the Djinn and Prince Mathias is annoying. But there's no way for the Sims 3 engine (that I can tell) can really do them justice. I find a way, that'll change. But for now, don't be expecting to see our two main villains.

Another gem from the interwebz

There are a number of inspirations for this fan-fiction. The most obvious are, of course, my own life as well as the Vampire The Masquerade campaign I've run on and off for the past almost 20 years. Those have provided the plot. The "window dressings" however come a variety of movies, TV shows, video games, and other stories.

While poking around the Internet this evening, I stumbled upon a database website that catalogs all the firearms used in movies, TV, and video games. Weaponry plays quite a role in the story in the chapters to come and I try to be very precise about my guns.

The Internet Movie Firearms Database

Big inspirations for the "look" in my head for Philly by Night come from a lot of the Gothic action/adventure genre: Underworld, Blade, the Matrix. I've been popping around the pages for those movies for the last hour or so and I've learned a few things, including one instance I got wrong.

Michael's primary gun is a Beretta M93R machine pistol. My inspiration for this is two-fold. One, it was the villain's gun in an old anime called "Crying Freeman" and two, I presumed this was the weapon Selene used throughout much of the Underworld series.

After all, a normal Beretta M92 is not capable of full auto like Selene uses frequently. So it had to be an M93, right?

Wrong. One of the dangers of getting too inspired by a movie prop.

So, how precise do I want to be? Keep the M93 or give Michael a modded 92 like in Underworld?

Either way, it's a cool website. Check it out.

Vampire portraits: The Big Three

As promised, here come the portraits that I've put together, starting with the three main characters thus far.

The first here is, of course, Michael Allens. As Michael is based upon me, he is a rough approximation of what I looked like about 20 or so years ago. The ashen skin tone of the portrait is an effect of being a vampire in Sims 3: Late Night and while all three of these portraits will show that same effect, not all the portraits I've created will do so.

The second is Deborah Means. Deborah is a tricky one, because she too is based upon a real life person (interestingly, the only real life person of these with whom I have no contact today). But she is also meant to be a bi-racial character, half-Irish half-Chinese. I'm not entirely convinced this second aspect comes out fully in this image, but it is a good approximation of the character I see in my mind.

The third is Rebecca. One of the struggles with Rebecca is to make her distinct in appearance from Deborah. The written descriptions of them both being young, petite, pretty, and red-headed make it very easy to confuse the two visually, even if the real life people on whom they are based look nothing alike. (Actually, the real life Rebecca is a brunette, who only occasionally is a "bottle red.") Still, I think I've effectively created a distinct appearance for her here.

Act Two Chapter Seven - Are We Ourselves?

Michael walked in on a scene from one of his most lurid fantasies. Rebecca and Kris were intertwined naked on the bed. Neither was stirring at the moment, but from the up-and-down of Kris' chest, he could tell they had just finished something rather intense and were now taking a short break. Sensing his entrance, Rebecca stirred.

“I hope there's something left in her.” she purred.

“How much did you drink?” said Michael, a tone of alarm in his voice.

“Not much. She's spent from...other activities. Why are you...wait, let me guess. This is the one that's your favorite, isn't she?”

“She is.”

“Not really your type. Not a redhead. Way too much hair, even in places women aren't supposed to have it.”

“ Maybe you don't know what my type is anymore.” Michael sat down on the bed. He gave Kris' unshaven leg an affectionate stroke. She stirred at his touch.

“You're late.” purred Kris.

“Couldn't be helped. Vampire business and all. Any strength left in there for me?”

“A little.”

“Good. I'm hungry.” Michael began to undress when the front door of the apartment launched open with a loud bang.

Michael and Rebecca were both on their feet in a heartbeat when Deborah charged in. She seemed a mite disheveled and distracted.

“Oh, you're here.” she said, surprise in her voice.

“You knew that.” replied Michael, puzzled. “I told Rebecca to take Kris back here before our meeting.”

“I'd forgotten.” Deborah stared at Rebecca intensely. It was an odd look, as if she'd never seen her before.

“Deborah?” inquired Michael.

Deborah snapped her attention back to him. “Sorry, just a little distracted. Your childe is quite the prize.”

“You had a chance to sample the goods last night, but you chose to beat the crap out of her instead of fucking her.” reminded Michael. His tone was angry.

“Yeah,” agreed Deborah half-heartedly. “Maybe they'll be another time.” With that, she turned and walked back out of the apartment, shooting a sly glance back at Rebecca as she did so.

“That was odd.” observed Kris.

“A little.” admitted Michael. Actually, it was quite odd. The tone of her voice, the way she carried herself, none of it was typical Deborah. She seemed rather off. Michael shrugged.

“Where were we?” He said, turning back to Kris.

----

Mathias sat at prayer in the Antrim chapel at Roanoke College. The place seemed deserted, but Prince knew The Djinn lingered nearby, ever vigilant. After a long moment, the Prince stood.

“Any insights? Revelations?” inquired The Djinn.

“We must be patient, as we ever are. Dangers lurk all around us. The werewolf matter is resolved for now. But other threats emerge.”

“Solomon Wolfe awaits your pleasure, mi'lord.”

“So comes the harbinger.” Said Mathias dramatically. “Bring him before me.”

The Djinn half-floated to the chapel entrance. Even Mathias, with all of his centuries, found the assassin's movements unnerving. The Djinn opened the door and beckoned Solomon inside.

The big Gangrel walked in. “I bring word, my Prince. There is a new Kindred within your territory. A new visitor.”

“I had not heard this.” exclaimed Mathias. “Who is he?”

“She.” corrected Solomon. “I know little about her. A young girl, perhaps 18. Red hair, blue eyes. Butterfly tattoo on her shoulder. She has been spotted hunting in Blacksburg, but has evaded Deborah's and my own attempts to corral her.”

“She will not evade me.” interjected The Djinn.

“Go. Bring her before me. She must pay her proper respects to the Lord of these lands.”

The Djinn stepped into the shadows and vanished from sight.

“I appreciate you bringing this to my attention, Solomon. I will not forget this service you have given me.”

With that Solomon dipped his head as if in salute and departed. Mathias turned around and headed back to the chancel, to resume his prayers.

“Not all is as it appears with this new vampire.” came a voice from the darkness. Mathias felt a momentary chill. Few kindred anywhere could get the drop on him. Not even the Djinn could do that, but there was another in the city that could.

“Ernie.” said Mathias nervously. “You spy on my devotions?”

“Like Solomon, I too bring you tidings from Blacksburg and tidings of this same new vampire. She is not so evasive as Solomon implies.”

“Then the Djinn will find her an easy catch.” said Mathias dismissively.

“Do not be so confident in this matter, mi'lord.” said Ernie, emerging from the shadows.

“What do you know?” demanded Mathias, now confident that Ernie himself posed no threat.

“I will not trade what I know so easily, my Prince. You must offer me something, and something more substantial than the weak promise you gave to Solomon.”

“What is it you want then?”

“You know what I want. And I know what you want. There is opportunity here for both of us to claim our prizes.”

“For you, the boy. For me...”

“...Deborah, of course.” said Ernie with a smile. “Your piety is fervent, my Prince, but your flesh still desires those things you have so often denied yourself.”

Mathias looked Ernie up and down. He did not like this. It was one thing for Ernie to know of his desires. Mathias knew he'd made little secret of his lust for the beautiful Daeva, but Ernie had turned that knowledge to his advantage. Mathias was the elder, the greater, the Prince of the city, and yet he felt completely disarmed in this negotiation.

“You shall have him.”

“That is your pledge? Your bond?”

“Yes.”

“Then I will hold you to it, Prince Mathias. He is not to be harmed, but delivered to me at the end of this business. Agreed?”

Mathias nodded. A leap of faith, he knew. “Tell me what you know.”

“The new vampire is not some new visitor to the city. She is the childe of Michael Allens. Newly embraced.”

Mathias felt his anger begin to boil within him, but he said nothing for a long moment. Michael had been nothing but trouble from day one and now this!

“Then Solomon lied to me.” Said the Prince.

“Perhaps. Perhaps not. I do not know if he knows the truth of this matter, but I do know that Deborah does. They conspire to hide this truth from you.”

“Then this is the last straw. They escaped my wrath before. Not this time.”

“He is not to be harmed.” reminded Ernie.

“I made that pledge before I knew the whole story.” insisted Mathias. “A law has been broken. There must be justice.”

“He is not to be harmed.” repeated Ernie. “I have your word. Or is the word of a Prince worth nothing these days?”

“He cannot go unpunished.” bellowed Mathias. “My pledge to you does not exempt him from justice.”

“There are other ways of punishing him. Slay his allies. Deny him his new childe. But harm him not.”

“Go.” barked the Prince, his voice full of fury. “Leave me at once.”

“As you wish, mi'lord. But forget not your promise, for I will not.”

Mathias waited in silence for several minutes. “Marco! Giovanni!”

Two thralls marched dutifully inside. “Summon Andreas and Sophia and their childer. We have much to discuss.”

----

Mathias was mistaken. The Djinn could indeed cloak his presence from his master and, in addition, was also quite proficient at sensing the presence of others so cloaked. A handy skill for a hunter such as he. When he heard Ernie skulking in the shadows, he masked his presence and kept watch. Ostensibly to ensure his master was in no danger, he soon found the conversation to his interest.

"Allens takes a childe when he is one himself." snarled the Djinn in his thoughts. "First, Deborah gains permission along with Andreas and Sophia. And now this violation will go unanswered, all due to a deal with the madman. All the while, the Djinn sits back quietly, all hope for an apprentice still unfulfilled.”

The Djinn opened and closed his hands in frustration. Decades of waiting fueled his own rage. Long had he waited for his moment. Had it come at last?

“If Ernie can manipulate this transgression to his own benefit, perhaps so can I."

With that, silent as a crypt, the Djinn departed into the night.

----

"Sometime soon, maybe tonight, Mathias will send his majordomo to find you." said Michael firmly. Michael sat on the foot of the bed. Kris slumbered softly, but Rebecca was awake and alert.

"You will have to convince him that you are a new visitor to the territory." Michael continued. "Lull him into a false sense of security and then we will strike."

Rebecca shrugged. "That doesn't seem so hard."

"Don't be hasty. He is ancient, skilled, terrifying. He is known as the Djinn, black of skin and black of heart. But he is a man, or once was. That is something you can use to your advantage. You've only been kindred for a few brief nights, but as you've already noticed, you carry the marks of our Daeva heritage: flawless beauty, poise, and grace. And, unlike Prince Mathias, the Djinn is not a mind reader, so your intentions will not be laid bare to him."

"You will not be able to help me." said Rebecca with resignation.

"Not at first. You are the bait. Solomon and I will spring the trap. Between the two of us, the Djinn should fall."

“I don’t like this.”

“Neither do I.” said Michael. “I had hoped for more time before you were discovered. Time to prepare you. Now you are thrust, a babe in the woods, into a world of wolves and lions. Monsters all. Predators all. Killers all.”

“As am I.” reminded Rebecca.

“You’ve had less practice. One corpse does not equal the scores dead by these beasts’ hands. The Djinn was a soldier once, and was one when our grandparents’ grandparents were little more than the hope of past generations. In straight up battle, I’m no match for him. Neither is Solomon. But distracted…” He let his voice trail off.

“So what must I do?”

“What I’ve taught you so far. Go out. Hunt. Feed. He will find you when the time comes.”

“And then what?”

Michael gave her nude form a good long gaze, up and down, from toe to the top of her head. “I think you can figure that out on your own.”

Rebecca nodded. “What time is it?”

“One thirty.” Answered Michael, glancing at the clock.

“Then I’d best get started.” Rebecca grabbed her clothing and began to dress. Michael moved to rouse Kris.

“Suppose he does not come tonight.” Said Rebecca. “If I can’t be around you to keep up the ruse, where will I hide from the sun?”

“Good question. I think I have an answer.”

---

Michael had a number of thralls and allies he could use to hide Rebecca. Some, such as Kris, were students whose residences were the Virginia Tech dormitories. Those would not serve. But Boar, Mitch, Joshua Burke, and some others had their own apartments. So, Michael took Rebecca to Boar.

Although it was 2 o’clock in the morning, Boar and Mitch were both still awake, playing Mortal Kombat on Boar’s Nintendo. Both had been told by Deborah that things were now afoot, so neither reacted with much surprise to Rebecca.

Michael left Rebecca in their keeping, repeating his instructions to Rebecca regarding the trap they were laying for the Djinn. He drove back to his cabin.

Kris was waiting for him, an impatient look on her face.

“Is something wrong?” he asked. The impatience faded and anxiety took its place.

“What happens to me now? With her?” she asked nervously. “I’ve been yours for almost a year now. I love you, Michael. I would do anything for you. Am I to be replaced?”

“I see our fun tonight did not remove these questions from your mind.” Said Michael frankly. “How far does your devotion go, Kris? I seem to recall you once telling me it didn’t matter who else I was with.”

Kris said nothing in reply to that, but her face was a picture of anguish. His words had cut deep. Michael paused. A twinge of regret filled his heart. “That was an unfair thing to say. I’m sorry. You always knew there were others.”

“Playthings. Dinner. All meaningless. This one isn’t. Rebecca is important to you. Why else make her into one of your own kind?”

“To punish her.”

“And yet, you take to her bed with as much, if not more, eagerness than you do mine. How is that punishment?”

“You don’t understand. I…” Michael never got to finish his thought. The world erupted into chaos.

Without warning, the room exploded into sudden violence. Glass shattered. Wood splintering. Michael felt the hard impact of something against his body, flesh tearing. It had all happened so quickly that Michael’s mind could barely register the truth: He was being shot.

He and Kris both hit the floor with a thump. Quiet reigned for a brief moment as Michael came back to his senses. They were under attack! He tore back to his feet, grabbed his katana from his rack on the living room wall, and then dashed out into the night.

It was Norman, Andreas’ childe. He was dressed in military fatigues and wielding a submachine gun; Michael recognized it as a H&K MP5. He was swapping clips when Michael dashed outside.

“Still got some fight in you?” asked Norman, bringing the gun to bear once more. Michael leaped quickly to his right, his vampiric prowess carrying him several feet into the air.

But Norman was just as fast, letting off a quick burst from his gun. The bullets tore through the air, narrowly missing Michael as he grabbed the branch of a nearby tree. Without a moment’s hesitation, he launched himself towards Norman and brought his blade down towards his foe’s head.

Norman brought the gun up to try to parry the sword blow. Steel struck upon steel, and Michael’s slash was deflected off to the side. Michael landed on his feet, barely a yard away from Norman. Norman brought the gun back down to fire again and Michael saw his opening. He slashed hard upward. The razor sharp blade sliced into Norman’s right arm, cleaving it from his body, only stopping when it struck his ribs.

Michael yanked the sword back as the gun clattered on the gravel road at their feet. Norman grasped futilely at the stump of his arm when Michael’s next strike cleaved through his neck. His head dropped and rolled a few short feet before turning to dust. As did his body as it fell forward.

The whole fight had lasted maybe ten seconds. Michael briefly remembered Norman’s boasts at the Akron football game meeting the year before, before remembering Kris.

He dashed back inside to find her lying where she’d fallen. She’d taken at least three rounds from Norman’s initial barrage. Blood was everywhere, calling to Michael. He resisted his urges to cradle Kris.

“Hospital…” he stammered, the shock of the past moments coming home.

“No…” whispered Kris. She coughed and blood spattered from her lips. “Too late…” She was using every effort, every last ounce of her strength, to stay awake. “Shouldn’t…have doubted…” She gasped. “…promise. Remember your…”

Michael nodded. He did remember. And in that moment, he stopped fighting himself. He sank his fangs into her throat and drank deeply. He drank quickly, feeling her life drain into him as she had wanted. He felt her stiffen after a few seconds and knew that she was gone.

Michael took to his feet, the fresh blood now surging to the bullet wounds in his body, healing the damage Norman had done. He looked down at Kris. In the end, taking her life was not so sexy after all. His heart ached. He wanted to cry, to grieve, but he also knew there was still danger. There was no time. He had to get to Rebecca, to Deborah, to Solomon. Norman wouldn’t have attacked without reason. Mathias knew! The game was up.

He turned to make for the door again when a shadow passed behind him. Michael spun to attack, but was too slow. He felt pain in his chest as the stake drove home. He felt his limbs stiffen and he dropped to the ground like a statue.

“Too easy.” Said The Djinn, emerging from the shadow. “Now, for your childe and sire.”

Next chapter

The Vampire portrait project

I've been tardy again about posting. A lot going on in real life for me right now, so I can't dedicate a lot of time to the story right now.

However, I have been tooling around a bit in Sims 3. One of the nice things about games with character creation sets this broad is that it allows authors like me to create portraits and pictures of the characters in our heads.

Philly by Night 2012 is an interesting exercise in this, because nearly every character is either A) based on a real person or B) based on a World of Darkness game character.

Item A forces me to be somewhat creative, since this is a fictional account that uses characters that somewhat resemble the real life people upon which they are based. So, in my estimation, their appearances really shouldn't stray too much from reality.

Item B would seem to be easy to deal with, since these characters are completely fictional. However, in the absence of something blatant and obvious in the character's background, I tend to associate these characters and their appearances with the people who played them. This produces a problem when an Item B character was created by an Item A character.

For example, Mitch and Ernie are, in one sense, the same person. Not narratively obviously, but Mitch is based on the real person that I know and Ernie was that real person's character in my Vampire game. So I can't have them look completely alike, yet they're going to be similar because that's how they look in my head.

So far, I like what I'm coming up with. Now that you've heard me talk about this, you'll probably be able to spot which characters are based on the same people, but I'm hoping they look different enough that it won't be completely obvious to someone hasn't read what I just wrote.

I hope to be posting these in the next few days. I'll probably put up another chapter also since I'm presently about five or six chapters ahead of what I've posted so far.

The Craft of Writing, Part Deux

I wrote another metapost like this a while back, talking about the art and science behind the creation of story. I mentioned in that article that the plot of my vampire story has largely been set for many years.

But what makes a story transcend from just series of disjointed episodes to something greater? Usually great stories have an overarching theme that gets woven into the plot. I'll admit there wasn't one for this story. It was a simple fictional biography of a fictional vampire, based upon people I've known in real life and a roleplaying game campaign.

That's no longer the case. A theme is developing organically. On its own, almost spontaneously. And I'll admit I'm a little awed as to how it's happening.

As I've made clear, there are strong story elements in this fan fiction that are drawn from my real life. Several characters, the setting, all taken from real life, in many cases altered dramatically for various reasons, and then transposed into the fictional world.

And now it feels like the reverse is happening. The art is now transposing itself back into real life.

Michael's story is becoming a story of redemption. He falls into darkness and falls hard, and he will spend a tremendous amount of time and energy trying to climb back to the light, working to atone for his mistakes and recapture his humanity. That's a suitable theme for VtR. But what's funny is how it's playing out in real life too.

After a nearly ten year hiatus, I've recently become reacquainted with the woman on whom the character of Rebecca is based. That ten year hiatus came about because of some really stupid and hateful things I did. I want that friendship back. I want to make amends. I want to show that I'm a different person. And progress is being made...slowly perhaps, but it's happening.

So Michael is me and I am Michael...maybe in ways I haven't realized. But if it makes the story better...and my life better, so be it.

Act Two Chapter Six - I Feel You

A week passed. Each night, Michael took his new protégé out into the town to hunt and to hone the skills she would need to both survive her new life as well as, at least in part, enjoy it.

But there were appearances to be maintained. Staying away from his own sire, however quiet and unobtrusive she wanted him to be, was bound to bring suspicion. Spending time with Deborah cramped his plans for this particular Saturday night, but it could not be helped.

Rebecca awoke to find herself alone, or at least mostly so. Corwin was there at the cabin, apparently waiting for her.

She walked out into the living room of the cabin and gave him a look-over. Rebecca had taken Michael's thrall a few times already and the look on Corwin's face indicated an eagerness for her to do so again. She smiled.

“Where's Michael?”

“He was summoned away for an important meeting. He will return later.” Corwin paused. “He gave me strict instructions to keep you here. You may as well make the most of it.”

Rebecca chuckled at his final comment. “You'd like that, wouldn't you?”

“I can think of a few things you can do to me.” said Corwin somewhat flippantly.

Rebecca looked at him without giving an answer. Although Corwin didn't know it, what she was contemplating was not what pleasures she could share with him, at least not without an additional motive. Which would be easier, she wondered. Take him, ravish him, and leave him weakened and unable to stop her from leaving, or simply overpower him and go?

The former might be more fun, but Rebecca determined that it take too much time. She had learned that Corwin was almost a stereotypical gamer nerd in his appetites. He was much like the kid in the candy store, and once inside was oh-so-reluctant to leave. His hungers and lusts were nearly insatiable.

“Not tonight.” she answered at last. “I think I will find my pleasures elsewhere.”

“Michael told you not to leave.” If Corwin was disappointed, it did not distract him from his duties.

“And how will you stop me?” said Rebecca coldly. “You may be a thrall. You may be my sire's favorite thrall, but you are no match for me and you know it.”

“I'm not his favorite.” corrected Corwin.

“All the more reason for you not to challenge me.” said Rebecca sharply. “He may not be quite so upset if I leave you bloody and broken on the floor.”

“I have strict orders.” said Corwin. “You are not to leave.” Her threats appeared to have no effect.

“Very well.” Then, without warning, she lashed out with a vicious punch, slamming her fist hard into Corwin's midsection. He doubled over and she brought another blow down on his back. Down he went.

She knelt down to ensure he wasn't too badly injured, just incapacitated. She had no real desire to hurt him. After all, the same thrall-bond that drove him to defy her for Michael's sake also drove her and she had no interest in harming one her sire considered so valuable.

Still, some disobediences were worth it. On her own, she could snare some pretty thing, bring him back to the lair, and give Michael a threesome he'd not soon forget. She'd planned this for several days and now was her chance to implement it.

She took Corwin's car and drove into town. She had a particular mark in mind: tall, dark, and male. Although she'd done the lesbian thing a couple more times in the past week, her appetites ran towards more masculine fare this evening. She wondered what Michael would think if he saw her taking it in more than one orifice at once. The thought of it being done to her and of Michael's likely reaction aroused her and spurred her onward.

Hokie House was her first stop. It was the first time she'd been back there since Corwin had brought her and Shawn here. It had only been a week, but what a week.

She scanned the crowd eagerly, trying to find a suitable mark. Blond, brunette, pretty boy, drunken frat brother, nerd-about-town, football player, pretty much the gamut of male college life was present before her. But her eyes kept being draw away from them to a petite redheaded Goth girl at the bar.

Rebecca shook it off. “No, I'm looking for a guy tonight. But goddamn, she's something else. Wow is she hot!”

The Goth noticed her stare and locked eyes with Rebecca. There was a “come-hither” look behind her eyes, and Rebecca almost caved. But she resisted. “Who's hunting who tonight?” she asked herself. She turned away and headed into the midst of the crowd to escape her.

Now up close, the smell of all the people was intoxicating. She felt a hand grope her ass and she spun around to see a handsome giant. He was black, but had piercing blue eyes. “Giant” was not an exaggeration, he must have stood at least 6'6”. A basketball player perhaps, or someone just inordinately lucky in the tall department.

“Hi.” she said quietly.

“Hey, you look a little lost. Looking for someone?”

“Yeah, but I think I've found him.” She gave him a coy smile. “Is it true what they say about black men?” She grabbed his crotch for emphasis.

“I take it you want to find out.”

“Call it a scientific study.”

“Is that what they call it these...” He stopped mid-flirt and both of them turned to find the Goth standing there beside them.

“He's not the one you want.” she said, almost in a purr. Rebecca found herself entranced, unable to take her eyes off of her.

“Hey, there's enough of me to go around.” said the basketball player.

“Scram.” said the Goth with authority. He backed off and disappeared into the crowd. She turned to Rebecca. “Outside.” Her tone was gentle, but insistent.

It was not what Rebecca had in mind, but she no longer cared. All that mattered to her in that moment was being with this irresistible beauty. Those handful of steps out into the night air were almost agony, because Rebecca could not look at her and see where she was going at the same time.

Rebecca headed to the car. The Goth followed. “My place?” offered Rebecca. She was still cognizant of her plan, and if Michael thought this creature as exquisite as she did, this would be an even better gift that she'd hoped.

“Yes.” said the Goth, climbing in. “And keep your eyes on the road. Wouldn't want to get ourselves killed before we have our fun.”

“No, that wouldn't serve.” Rebecca started the car and began heading for Michael's cabin. She drove with some haste, but still mindful of the road. She was impatient to have a taste of this Gothic goddess beside her.

She pulled the car alongside the road just short of the cabin, in essentially the same place that Corwin always parked. The Goth girl got out first and Rebecca followed, coming up behind her like a predatory cat. When the moment came, she pounced. She grabbed the girl, spun her about, then pinned her to a tree, smothering her mouth with hers.

They kissed passionately for a long moment, and then Rebecca reached up for the neckline of her tank top, running her hands eagerly across the girl's ample bosom. She gave the neckline a tug downward, exposing the girl's breasts. The left one was tattooed, the mark of an Oriental dragon with its tail snaking around beneath it.

“Oh shit....” Rebecca almost didn't get to finish when Deborah slammed her hands into her chest, knocking her all the way across the road and into a tree. The impact was accompanied by the crunch of bone.

Rebecca tried to scramble to her feet, but the pain was intense. Before she could move, Deborah was on her again, hoisting her back to her feet.

“Son of a bitch!” Deborah snarled. “You're Rebecca, aren't you? Damn him to hell. What was he thinking, turning you? Making you one of us?” Deborah began to squeeze tightly on Rebecca's neck. “I should just twist your head off right here.”

“You'll do no such thing.” barked a command.

Deborah tossed Rebecca aside and turned to face the new arrival. She found a sword pointing at her face, brandished by a very angry looking Michael.

“You dare wield a weapon at me?” snarled Deborah in fury. “After what you've done?”

“You promised me vengeance.”

“Not like this.” Retorted Deborah. “Do you know what you’ve done?”

“I do.” said Michael coldly. “Death was too quick, too painless. There is a worse fate, as you well know.”

Rebecca stood up. She was shaking, half from fear of Deborah but also in shock from the words she was hearing from Michael. “What...what are you talking about, Michael?”

“You poor pathetic little thing.” answered Deborah. “You have no idea what he's done to you. No concept of the fate to which he's condemned you. The nightmare that has just begun for you. Tell me, Michael, did you only embrace her or did you do more?”

“More.” Michael answered.

Deborah's face, already contorted in anger, became even more intense. “God damn you, Michael. How could you be so cruel? Was not the embrace enough?”

When Michael gave no answer, Deborah let out her breath. “Well, now you have her, your pet for all eternity. Not that it will be very long. Mathias will kill us all if he finds out.”

“Not if he's dead.” said Michael forcefully.

On one level, she knew he was right. There was no longer any choice. No laying low to bide their time. No longer. Michael forced all their hands. Now it was a race to see who would strike first.

“I'll contact Solomon.” said Deborah. “He can meet us tomorrow night after the concert.”

“Concert?” asked Rebecca.

“Krushed Prophet, our cover band. We have a gig tomorrow night.” answered Michael. “I would have kept you home, in order to ensure Deb here didn't learn of you, but now that's moot.”

“Who's Solomon?” asked Rebecca.

“Enough of the questions.” Snarled Deborah. “Time is of the essence. If Mathias learns what you’ve done before we’re ready…”

“He won’t.” said Michael.

“Then keep her on a tighter leash.” said Deborah. “You’re just made your third strike, Michael. If we survive all this, there will be consequences for your disobedience. I promise you that.”

Corwin drove Deborah back into town, leaving Michael and Rebecca alone together at the cabin. Rebecca slunk inside quietly, fearful of Michael's anger and frustration.

Michael, for his own part, was more angry at himself than Rebecca. He should have known Corwin was no match for Rebecca if she proved determined to leave. And likewise, in his rage, he had spoken much too openly of his purposes within Rebecca's earshot.

Rebecca sat on the sofa, demure and contrite. Michael pulled out a chair from the dining room table and sat down glumly. He looked at her. “Why did you leave? Corwin gave you my instructions.” His tone was firm, but not harsh.

“I wanted to surprise you. Bring you back someone we could both enjoy. I didn't think...”

“No, you clearly didn't.” snapped Michael. “You knew I was at a meeting. You knew or should have guessed that other vampires would be there, therefore realizing that they were others of our kind in town tonight. But you didn't think of that, did you?”

“I'm sorry.” Her voice was pleading. “I never meant to put you in danger.”

“Never mind that now. What's done is done. Thankfully,” he continued. “it was Deborah who found you and not someone else.”

“Your sire?”

“Yes, that's her.”

“I can see why you couldn't say no to her.”

“Actually," Michael's tone softened, his anger now spent. "I did for quite some time. I was able to because I had you. Once you were gone, I had no reason to resist any longer.”

“Once I was gone...” Rebecca repeated. “What did you mean about vengeance, Michael?”

Michael looked into her eyes. “I brought you here. I took you from everything you knew, everyone you loved. I turned you to darkness, enslaved you to a hunger for living blood. I gave to you as your first victim one who loved you. And I've made you a slave to my will. That is what I meant by vengeance.”

“All because I slept with Shawn and not with you?”

“Yes.” said Michael. “You know, you were right about me all along. I was a monster. I am a monster. And now and for all time, so are you.”

----

Pedro's was reasonably crowded for a Sunday night. The little Mexican restaurant was the venue of Krushed Prophet's latest gig and Michael was setting up on stage. Rebecca was helping. They had said little to one another since the previous night, since the revelation of Michael's true motives.

Deborah wandered in and joined in with the set up. She too said little. It wasn't until Bob joined them and made some snarky comment about the tension in the room that the three vampires tried to lighten up.

“Is Ernie coming?” Michael asked of Deborah.

“No, thank God.” she replied. “His allegiance is still suspect. I worry what he might do if he learned about your pet.”

“I haven't threatened the Masquerade.”

“And you’re not so naïve to think that’s the only thing he cares about.” Retorted Deborah. “Imagine, if all you’ve presumed about his motives is true, how he’ll react to find you’ve taken another lover, one so special and dear to you?”

“I can’t imagine he’d turn me in over that. If Mathias kills me, then what does Ernie gain? I’ll be dead. His prize lost.”

“You’re banking on his obsessions?”

“Good point.”

“So we move forward without him.”

“Yes.”

Michael shook his head. “It will be harder.”

“Indeed it will. You have risked much by this, Michael.”

The rest of the band arrived and they finished their set up. Rebecca sat off to the side of the stage, separate from the audience. Michael walked over to the mic to begin his usual introduction.

“Evening, everyone. We are Krushed Prophet and we so glad to be here tonight. Before we begin, I want to ask you all something. Anyone here bought the new Depeche Mode album?” There were a few cheers. “Ok, a few of you. We’re going to open with a track off of it.” Deborah began playing the distinctive guitar rift of I Feel You. “Now those of you who have the album know that this isn’t how the song really begins. A few of us old fogeys with tape players did not appreciate the real beginning of the song. So we’re going to play this with a big ‘fuck you’ to De’Mode for your little joke. You got us.” Michael paused. “Just kidding. We love you guys. This is I Feel You.”

The band ripped into the song and the crowd cheered.

After a few more songs, as usual from a variety of bands, Michael gestured to Rebecca and invited her to come forward. Deborah gave him an ugly glance as Becca walked onto the stage. She came to the center mic.

“I want to introduce to all of you, my girlfriend Rebecca.” said Michael. “She doesn't normally sing with us, but I think you'll enjoy it when she does. Most of you know the band Journey; you know Steve Perry and how broad his voice range is. Well, we tried and tried and tried and the only one who could match his voice was a woman. This is Don't Stop Believin'.”

Michael began playing the distinctive four chord pattern that began that song, as Rebecca grew more relaxed at center stage. Deborah came over to the keyboard and glowered at Michael.

“Trust me.” he whispered as Rebecca began to sing.

Rebecca had always had a strong singing voice and her embrace as a Daeva only strengthened that. As Michael had guessed, she hit every note, singing with passion and power. The crowd was entranced and even Deborah found herself barely able to concentrate on playing guitar while she sang.

Michael smiled as he played. He also noted Solomon walk in and take a seat in the back of the crowd.

They played a few more tracks and then finished their set, Rebecca keeping the main mic the whole time. She was quite the hit with the crowd.

Michael felt inordinately pleased with himself as they finished up and came down from the stage. The crowd began to break up and Michael watched as Deborah went to Solomon, presumably to bring him up to speed on what all had happened. Michael did not look forward to what Solomon would say, but he tried to not let that dim his mood.

“Girlfriend?” Michael heard behind him. “Now I know why I haven't seen you in two weeks.”

He turned and faced someone he had not expected to see: Kris. She looked cross.

“Oh, hi.” replied Michael. “Yeah, I've been busy.”

“No doubt.”

“You've never been jealous before.”

“You've never referred to any of your one-night-stands as a girlfriend before either. That's me, remember?” Her tone was angry and Michael found her insubordination somewhat galling.

“Things have changed.” said Michael firmly. “And you need to remember your place.”

“In your bed is my place.” Kris continued defiantly.

“And it still will be.” promised Michael. “Come. There's someone you need to meet.”

Kris shuffled her feet behind Michael as she followed, making no bones about her anger. But she did follow.

“Kris, meet Rebecca. My childe.”

“You gave her the Embrace?” Kris seemed crestfallen. “You never offered it to me.”

“For five years, I've haunted his dreams.” taunted Rebecca. “Every night, he prayed to have me and now he does. Could he say the same of you?”

Kris went from angry to dejected in her face, but said nothing. “Still,” Rebecca continued. “you are cute. Perhaps you'll prove worth some fun.”

This aggressive tone was another first for Michael to witness in Rebecca. She's always been so demure, but now she was bold, assertive. He liked it.

“Rebecca, darling, why don't you go get to know Kris better? Deborah's apartment is half-a-block away. I think you can keep each other entertained while the rest of us talk.”

Rebecca reached out and groped Kris's amble breasts. Kris gave out a slight moan of pleasure. “Oh, I think we can have a great deal of fun.”

“Save some for me.” chided Michael. He turned and walked towards Solomon and Deborah.

“What the fuck were you thinking, Michael?” snarled Solomon.

“I see Deborah has filled you in.” This tone was flip, which only aggravated Solomon further.

“Don't be coy with me. Do you have any idea how much this endangers things?”

“I called in a debt. I was promised my revenge and now I have it.”

Solomon glared at Deborah. “I warned you about this.”

“We have to move against Mathias and soon.” said Deborah, ignoring Solomon's comment. “The time has come.”

“Acting in haste because of this fool's impulsive stupidity is not a good strategy. We still have to take the Djinn down first.”

“I think we have the perfect bait.” added Deborah. “Something to lure him out and finish him.”

Michael read between the lines. “Wait a minute...”

“Call it recompense for your folly.” she snarled. “And if we play our cards right there's no reason for Mathias to suspect she's yours. Just a nomadic kindred whose encroached on new territory without meeting the Prince. As the Prince's chief enforcer, The Djinn will come to fetch her. And then, we strike.”

Solomon nodded. “I will alert the Prince that a new Kindred has come to the city, one who seeks sanctuary here. Michael, prepare her for The Djinn's coming. She must be able to fool him into buying our story at least for a brief time. Hopefully, it will be long enough. For all our sakes..."
